Splash

Mink berkshire

DOB:  ~ 20 January 2007

About Splash

We adopted Splash (and his friends Gecko and Waffle) from Brisbane Rodent Rescue when he was just 6 weeks old.

Splash (aka Sploosh, SplashyRat, SplishSplash, The Minky Splash) is so named because he loves to play in water, and also due to the charming splattering of minky dots all over him.  He has a particularly large and adorable minky dot right in the middle of his belly... a perfect kissing target!  He is particularly beautiful, with his shiny black eyes in a minky face and soft pale pink ears and nose.  His fur is soft and sleek and he smells like marshmallows, which makes him particularly cuddly.

Splash is a high energy ratty, full of mischief and playfulness.  His passion is water, loving to splash about in the water bowl and dunk his head under to groom.  Pea fishing is an exciting treat which he leaps into with minky enthusiasm, even after all the peas are gone.  He also likes investigating faces and is fascinated by hair.

Hes grown into a lovely big laid back squish of a rat.  He's my good boy in the cage, never getting into too much trouble and staying out of the alpha politics the others play at.  he's also my best cuddler, loving to be held and massaged and squished and tickled.

He's grown big from all the good treats.

He's so laid back he loves to dangle.

He's sweeter than the jellybeans!

Looking very dignified in his soft tunnel.

Tales of Splash
The Splash Character

Current nicknames - Sploosh, Splashy, SplashyRat.

What can I say?  He's a sweetie!  There's something so innocent and adorable about Sploosh.  It may be that he doesn't get involved in rat politics, leaving the power grooming to Waffle.  It may be that he has a delightfully joyous bounce when he runs.  It may be that he's so disarmingly cute with his sweet fuzzy minky face and those pale pink accessories (nose, ears, etc).  It may be that he goes all limp as you rub his back and kiss his belly dot.  It may be his enthusiasm for leaping onto me and burrowing around inside my clothes.  I'm not sure what it is about him, but he just makes you go "awwwww".  Of course, that lets him get away with just about any naughtiness.

His passion is chasing things.  He loves to follow my hand around the floor and will do that for as long as I keep going.  He never actually wants to catch my hand, just chase it.  I love having him chase my hand about and then unexpectedly changing direction and going back over the top of him.  He gets all flustered for a split second and then spins around and pounces on my hand with so much joyful enthusiasm.  I ruffle him up and be bounds off so cheerfully.

He doesn't really have a disgusting habit as such... rather an annoying one instead.  He loves to splash about in the wading pool on freezing cold mornings and then climb into my shirt to dry off and warm up.

Minky massage

Sploosh is my sweetheart.
He's hardly ever any trouble and is a little bit sensitive and nervous with new things.  He absolutely adores lying on his back on my forearm and being scritched on the side of his furry rump.  He alternates between licking me madly and lying there, legs sprawled limply, all blissed out.  If I rub his belly he'll hold onto me with his hands and gaze up at me with his sweet whiskery face, or madly lick my fingers.  He's also partial to being snuggled up under my chin while I scratch his rump with my fingernails.  He's a sensory delight - all soft and whiskery and warm and smelling wonderfully of clean buckly fur.  <sigh>  The experience is so relaxing for both of us!

The Escapee

Sploosh's special talent is escapism... managing to sneak through the free range barrier without notice and go wandering about the house.   He's rather smart though, as he doesn't do this every day.  He waits for a few days until I drop my guard, then sneaks out unsupervised.  I have no idea how he manages to escape.  Gecko will spend all his run time shoving and chewing and blatantly trying to get out (subtle he's not!) and get nowhere, but Sploosh quietly finds a way out.  But he's so innocent and adorable I can't be mad at him.  I shake the yogurt drop jar and he comes running out from under the sofa or dining table to climb into my lap.
